Families headed for the Atlanta metro leave on a different road than families headed for Savannah and the coast, and the two corridors behave differently in cost, timing and traffic. Booking the wrong one is not a disaster, but it is a slower, more expensive move than it needed to be.
Relocating from Pittsburgh to Georgia is roughly a seven hundred mile job, far enough that delivery is scheduled in days rather than hours, and close enough that a well-planned load can be on the ground the day after it leaves.
All Ways Moving & Storage has been running households south since 1913, and Georgia sits squarely inside the territory our drivers know by feel.
Two Roads Into Georgia
Both corridors start identically: I-79 south to Charleston, West Virginia, then I-77 through the Virginia mountains. The split comes in the Carolinas. Atlanta-bound loads swing onto I-85 below Charlotte and run down through the Upstate. Coastal loads stay on I-26 to Columbia and drop onto I-95.
- Athens / Northeast Georgia – roughly 620 miles
- Augusta / Evans – roughly 650 miles
- Atlanta metro / Marietta / Alpharetta – roughly 685 miles
- Macon / Warner Robins – roughly 695 miles
- Savannah / Pooler / Richmond Hill – roughly 740 miles
- Brunswick / St. Simons Island – roughly 810 miles
The mileage gap between Athens and St. Simons is nearly two hundred miles, which is a meaningful difference in both price and delivery spread. Where you are landing needs to be settled before anyone quotes you a number.
Atlanta Delivery Is a Traffic Problem First
Nothing about an Atlanta move is unusual except the clock. The metro’s congestion is severe enough that arrival time, not distance, governs how the day goes. A truck that hits the Perimeter at the wrong hour loses hours it cannot recover, and crew time is billed whether the truck is moving or idling.
We schedule metro deliveries to land outside peak windows, which usually means an early start. Intown neighborhoods add a second layer: Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, Grant Park and similar districts have narrow residential streets, mature tree canopy and limited curb space, and some require a permit to hold parking for a trailer. Mid-rise and high-rise buildings in Midtown and Buckhead typically want their loading dock reserved in advance.
None of this is difficult. It is only difficult when it is discovered on delivery morning.
The Heat Is a Scheduling Decision
From June through September, Georgia afternoons regularly sit in the mid-nineties with humidity to match, and that shapes how a load is worked rather than whether it can be.
Crews start early and take the heavy carries before the worst of the afternoon. Wood furniture, upholstery, candles, vinyl records, electronics and anything wax-based need packing choices made with the destination climate in mind, which is where professional packing earns back its cost on a long southbound haul. If your Georgia closing lands behind your Pennsylvania one, our storage facilities hold the load at this end rather than parking it in a hot truck at the other.
Who Actually Shows Up on Loading Day
A large share of what advertises on southern routes is a broker. They quote a price, take a deposit, then sell your shipment to whichever carrier accepts the load, and the people who arrive at your door are strangers to the company you hired.
We operate under our own authority, including I.C.C. MC-10949 and USDOT 37587, and we are an approved contractor for Department of Defense and GSA relocations, which carries compliance obligations most residential movers never face. Our long-distance moving division runs these corridors with our own trucks and our own background-checked crews. All Ways began in 1913 in Washington, Pennsylvania, and we are certified Eco-Friendly Movers®.
Georgia Is Often One Option Among Several
Plenty of families comparing Atlanta against warmer or cheaper alternatives end up somewhere else entirely, and we run those corridors too. The I-95 route through Savannah continues straight into a relocation to Florida, the coastal option shortens considerably for families settling in South Carolina, and households drawn to the northwest corner of the state frequently look across the line at Tennessee instead.
If the move turns out to be regional after all, our Pittsburgh moving services page covers hourly crews and local rates.
